Feds haven't launched a public investigation into Signal or demanded that it provide LI. They haven't done this with SimpleX either.
Check how much Signal leadership pays themselves, esp considering that they have no revenue model. What is LI?
Yes, it's all from donations/ "loans", with the biggest contributor being Acton himself (very deep pockets).

You can never 100% trust any app and while I would probably rank both below briar if my life depended on it they should both be fine really.

It’s like accepting a computer from the feds, with their guarantee it’s totally unhackable. Nobody could ever actually determine if that’s true because it’s incredibly complex.
