As it turns out this almost exactly represents 4.3% inflation per year
1.25=0.16(1+0.04376)^(2025-1977)
Where the 0.04376 is the decimal form of 4.3% inflation
BUT 48 years is a long time

In 1977 $1-> gets 6.25 cans of soup
In 2025 $1->gets 0.80 cans of soup
So the USD LOST (1-6.25/0.80 ) ~ 87% of its purchasing power.
