Nostr is NOT a social network.

Nostr’s is a network of interconnected sovereignty respecting business apps.

Because end user sovereignty IS GOOD for business … simply replicating black box social apps alone will not make a successful Nostr app.

Eyeballs are not currency, on an open network of independent apps. Novel user content is what brings value and will differentiate apps on Nostr.

IRL businesses will pay app developers to have their data model integrated into (or harvested from) the public events published to Nostr. They will also pay to build black box apps alongside this network… and this is ok as well.

Because owning user data is more of a liability than a profit model, incremental off-loading of black box data onto the Nostr network will ALSO be a lucrative service that app developers can offer.

Nostr needs business apps, and businesses need the Nostr network.

Sovereignty IS the new profit model.

I like to think of NOSTR as the Identity Protocol with Bitcoin being the Energy Transfer Protocol.

I’ve heard this also. Wonder… what is the business value of “identity protocol”?

I disagree that owning user data is more of a liability than a profit model. That is entirely dependent on how user data is leveraged- and we have seen every disgusting abuse and misuse of personal data as could happen. Companies thrive on user data if they can derive meaningful insights. This has different implications in "legal" and illegal businesses- but both violate basic human privacy rights.

I think the distinction between “data ownership” and “data access” has not been explored enough.

Nostr may bring an opportunity for companies to “profit” from user data without sacrificing end user sovereignty.

This would help?

Well I don't believe Nostr has accomplished much in the way of sovereign data "ownership". "Anyone" can host a relay but there is little demand. I've implored as to why there is a lack of demand. Nostr data is not inherently valuable, yet it becomes a catch-all warehouse of information through diligence of users who share to public relays.

Users need to truly own their data, or at least a copy. Not all users, but plenty.

I could achieve more censorship-resistance for the majority of content in tradSocial environments simply by sharing my data across a selection of hosts. The odds of all of them censoring me are actually quite low. The odds of having redundant data and discoverability are rather high.

Nostr is similar to Bitcoin in the earlier days. "Yes that's really cool, maybe one day it will have value, but I don't have any problem sending my friends money with Venmo."
