I REMEMBER MY REACTION WHEN THIS HAPPENED. I CLOSED MY ROBINHOOD AND TD AMERITRADE ACCOUNT AND MOVED TO FIDELITY BECAUSE THEY WERE ONE OF THE FEW BROKERS TO NOT RESTRICT TRADING. THE PROBLEM WAS THAT I STILL HAD TO TRUST THEY'D PLAY FAIRLY. I ALSO NEVER FELT COMFORTABLE HAVING A CLAIM TO THE STOCKS. YOU CAN'T JUST EASILY TAKE CUSTODY OF STOCK CERTIFICATES. IT COSTED ME $100 FOR ONE STOCK CERTIFICATE PER TICKER AND IT TAKES WEEKS TO PROCESS. FOUND OUT ABOUT BITCOIN SHORTLY AFTER AND NEVER LOOKED BACK. GLAD TO BE OUT OF THAT CASINO FOR GOOD NOW.

You can have shares registered in your name (vs Cede and Co. "beneficial owndership") by making a DRS transfer to the transfer agent. For GME that would be ComputerShare. Fidelity does this for free, and roughly 25% of GME's total shares are currently registered in this way.

But are they considered the custodian? because if they are then it's no different
