The UK has military bases in Cyprus due to historical ties. When Cyprus gained independence from Britain in 1960, the UK retained sovereignty over two areas: Akrotiri and Dhekelia. These are known as Sovereign Base Areas and serve strategic military and intelligence purposes, especially in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean. They’re legally considered British Overseas Territories.
