if the plan doesn't have wheels why wouldn't they find a long empty desert or field to try ? Why go directly into the wall? Did they not know that they didn't have wheels.?

Seems it runs out of runaway. Probably was about to land and didn’t get the landing gear out properly and without the chance to abort the landing. But I’ve only seen this video, I guess we will know more soon.
