Dustin Hoffman would have sucked as the lead, but I always wondered what Kirk Douglas would have been like as Col. Trautman.
Hard no to both for me. Richard Crenna is the only Col. Sam Troutman. He made that role iconic.

Agree on Crenna, but I think Douglas would have been good. Perhaps a bit too famous at the time though.
