Today is the anniversary of the birth of Joseph Carey Merrick (August 5, 1862 – April 11, 1890). Mel Brooks hired David Lynch to direct a movie based on his life.

The Elephant Man (1980) was one of the first films made under the Brooksfilms banner.

Merrick is called John in the movie, but his real first name was Joseph.
