There can be advantages to running your own. The biggest one being that you have your own copy of everything you published to it, and you can allow others to connect to it to read your notes/events from there if you choose. So you’re less dependent on other relay operators. Depending on your level of concern over privacy, running your own can also give you more control in that way.
