What I love on #greece is that in some situations when you are going to pay cash you’ll get a random discount :). Like today I bought some souvenirs, price was 24.10€ and when the store owner saw I was going to pay cash, he changed the price to 24€.

Another time, on a boat, I bought some food for 20.60€, I gave them 20€ bill and I was going to give them those 60 cents and the lady waved her hand, said “it’s ok” and sent me away.

Do you know why shopkeepers round down the coin on cash transactions?

My guess is they’ll still get more without having to pay the visa/mastercard/bank transaction fees and maybe they will not declare this sale, so they won’t also pay taxes from this :)

It would be great if stores would be legally allowed to offer a fixed % discount for cash payments.

That is 100% correct! I live in the rural U.S. and discounts for cash are common among small business owners here as well and for the same reasons you mentioned.
