Thoughts on meaning as you interpret it now?
Seems like it's the story of 'Idiocracy' through poetry.

It means keep your rough edges intact. Donβt let the world grind you into bland respectable nothingness. Only the wild and free change the world.
I see that with the last line.
Though it's also saying:
-'boys' instead of 'men'
-'girls' instead of 'women'
-don't care about 'luck' (getting lucky - so π¬)
-hanging hats and carving crosses on them
-kill easily
Meaning those with rough edges do make a change but it can be at an expense - especially during times of war.
