Right, because you use your onchain bitcoin to create the channel, and then send it through the channel somewhere. At that moment the balance of the channel shifts to your channel partner (Phoenix). The it sits there locked untill the channel closes. From their point of view, they have locked a large sum of bitcoin, waiting there for you to receive. But you never do, I assume. It sits there for nothing.
