#asknostr

If your country is censoring you regardless which platform you are in, what would you do?

I am genuinely curious. I am sad to watch Britain falling from grace - cracking down hate speech is a direct threat of freedom of speech.

How would you instigate change and protect your freedom of speech?

1.) Do you stay and accept to be censored?

2.) Move to other countries?

3.) Take them to court? Can you trust them?

Thoughts #nostr?

There's no country on the planet that allows it's citizens to encourage others to commit acts of violence. Not one.

So, where exactly do you expect these freedom of speech warriors to go?

Try Russia. Exercise your free speech there and you'll be thrown out a forth floor window before you've finished your second sentence

I think you are ASSUMING which is easy to do and in itself is a privilege as part of the freedom of speech.

Let me expand it for you where I come from since you fail to ask what I was referring to on my previous post.

So journalist being detained and treated poorly because they criticise the gov't is not an ACT OF THREAT of Freedom of Speech? This is what I meant.

I believe you are confusing the violent protest (which I do not condone nor support) vs the peaceful protest which everyone has the right to do so! Censoring your people vs doing a proper investigation of the criminal acts are two different method of solving crises.

If a country cannot be criticised is no different from Totalitarian regime.

Yes, Russia, China and North Korea are controlling what their people can say and cannot say. BUT, their people are aware of this. Their people know what regime and society they are in. They are in no illusion that they are in democratic system!

Fascist regime are upfront about what they want from their people. Whereas some countries which called Democratic but actually operating Totalitarian is hypocrite.

Do not confuse freedom of speech from violence.

You are here on Nostr which I can assume you enjoy the censorship resistance that this tech offers. Some people as we speak right now do not have this luxury.

I do hope that no one from your relatives nor you will be at the receiving end of this censorship regime and will never experience poor detainment because you SPEAK UP (speech is not the same as violent act towards people - in case this definition gets misunderstood!) against your gov't.

Have a good one!

I'm a black man and my country was invaded by, and is still occupied by white people that have taken our lands and imprisoned my people.

When white people talk about their right to freedom of speech while standing on the backs of non-whites. it just makes me laugh.

I am not following your comment. Could you elaborate for me what are you trying to get at?

Are you saying that because you are going through your own struggle, other people's challenges in their own country are less important than yours?

Are you saying that because you are black and your country suffered, that people who are suffering from their country are less important because you believe you have suffered more and it is an excuse to laugh at the idea for asking genuine curiosity about their freedom of speech because it is less important than yours?

Could you enlighten me please?

None of your comment explained nor answered my question from my first post on how to instigate change on the freedom of speech? Meaning I am asking for solution rather complain and be on the victim mentality.

I am not going on the same path as you where I will pull up my ethinicity card and my country's situation because this is not the topic I am trying to ask.

If we always pull up who is suffering the worse rather than having a decent convo without mocking someone's genuinely curiosity and asking people's thoughts without turning it into a full blown cultural, race, gender and economic differences then we will never grow nor learn collectively as humanity.

I'm saying free speech is an illusion. I'm saying that those that are demanding free speech, are the ones that want anything they don't agree with silenced.

The only rights you truly have, are the ones you personally can defend yourself.

We can agree to disagree.

I can see your point why you say that. Otherwise, we will not be here on #nostr - of all platform, we chose it here because we value censorship resistance.

I am not losing hope for the humanity that we can still protect our freedom. The fact that the two of us can freely express ourselves here is in itself a privilege. I do not want this to stop or to be taken away from me and I can echo the same sentiments from the users of #nostr.

If we cannot defend our fundamental rights to express ourselves, freedom of speech, then how can we expect to personally defend ourselves without it?

PS. If you have said this comment to my first post, I could have saved myself time. đŸ¤“

It depends on the country and laws. Moving is a good option. Taking them to court is another option. And a revolution is also an option.

indeed. Same people from other social media echoed this too. Taking them to court will not have the best confidence from people.
