I've seen badges on people's profiles, but I don't really understand how they work. Can anyone create them and send them to others? Are they automatically added to the profile?

Do you have a link that I can read to learn more about it?

yes anyone can create them and send them to others, they’re not automatically added to the profile, the recipient must accept the badge in order for it to populate on their profile.
