To be clear, just hosting text doesn’t absolve relays from legal compliance, specifically GDPR, CCPA, and various local laws like not insulting the king of Thailand or having nazi propaganda and texts in France and Germany.

Even a pure peer to peer system like secure scuttlebutt, p2panda, earthstar, and others. Technically you need to register a GDPR data protection officer because you’re hosting other people’s content on your phone. The law is insane, but I checked this with a lawyer and German judge who specializes in GDPR and intellectual property and tech law…

Images and video are a bigger target, but text applies too. I like the idea of there being nostr protocol supported media servers that act as a parallel to relays. That said, the web is SUPER good at hosting media, so let’s not reinvent the wheel.

thank you for helping realize that this is a really challenging and complicated issue. Not that this solves the issue but i wonder about the idea of new users having ephemeral posts for example like 7 days until they establish some web of trust so that others are not hosting their data and potentially violating laws.
