It was a drunken typo that went too far and is alienating to no- and new-coiners.

It also represents opposition to Bitcoin’s use as a medium of exchange, as it has come to mean “never spend or sell” to many. That’s a wholly different philosophical conversation, though.

HODL may have played a significant part in bitcoin’s journey to maturity and is part of bitcoin culture and history. This entire thing was bootstrapped by nerds, geeks and misfits, many of whom did it for the lols. Very few grasped bitcoin’s significance from very beginning. I think it’s worth embracing our roots. It’s magic internet money and we shouldn’t forget it. If it prevents someone from taking bitcoin seriously then imo it says more about them than it does about bitcoin. As for spending or not, that’s really up to people to decide and it’s perfectly fine not to spend if you don’t want to. It’s going to be decades for bitcoin to monetize and holding is one of the rational choices.
