I found myself straight to the start 9.
My initial intentions were a home server. Or NAS as I first thought of years ago.
Mainly just tired of juggling multiple tavel drives. Was t to set up a secure home base.
Simple. Easy. Pretty much the most secure newb setup
Most secure depends on threat model, not vibes.
Start9 is secure because it is restrictive, not because it is inherently superior. That is not a bad thing but need to point that out.
If all you are needing is a NAS that is never reaching outside your LAN then any off the shelf server software will be fine. Just comes down to what interface you want. Start9, umbrel, unraid, trueNAS will all work fine.
If you intend to expand into VMs and docker containers then there are a few things to consider such as built in security vs ease of use, how comfortable you are checking for leaks, working through setup errors etc. Everything is a trade off.
Feel free to hit me up in DM or email if you want to discuss options.
I'll research a few of these big words and hit you up. Thank you man. It's definitely time for me to make things easier for me
