I have a standard android phone right now (my next phone will be degoogled, but I can't justify buying a new phone at this moment). I was using another texting app, but it is going away and today it wants to move me to google messages. Can anyone recommend another texting app? I also have signal, but it quit working as a general texting app and occasionally I have issues with messages either not going through or going through a day later, so I need something else.

A paid Mysudo will do both SMS and encrypted in same app.
It will encrypt if the other uses the free or paid version of MySudo. Hard to get people to move to that.
Other non SMS options mentioned Briar (tor based), SimpleX (signal+relay based), OxChat (nostr based) and Keet (bittorrent based) all seem good options. Dont forget Molly as a Signal replacement.
Ultimately I had to grab a cheap 2nd phone for one needed app that GrapheneOS wouldnt run. So I SMS off that with my $8/month plan. I dont carry it during the day and tell people if they need quicker response to message me via another means.
You probably can degoogle your android. My pixel 5 doesn't have google's operating system or apps on it.
I just went to using the standard unencrypted messaging app for all my people who aren't on signal, never had delayed messages though
