No, jaypeters@mastodon.social, it's the other way around. You verify your Mastodon profile with your Threads profile. The checkmark appears in your Mastodon profile not in your Threads profile. Like you already did with the Verge link. Also, rel=me has no connection to ActivityPub. It was introduced with XFN (XHTML Friends Network).
