Want your own NIP05 address?

For about 20000 sats per year you can cover the cost of your own domain name and use free hosting providers like github to serve up the file for NIP05 using easy to follow guides.

NIP05 is not verification. Its a cross check from a nostr client to a website that presumably the referenced user controls. Unfortunately, most users do not self manage their own NIP05. Having someone else provide your NIP05 domain puts them in custodial control.

This is very low hanging fruit for people to do themself and can be a fun weekend project.

I am all for people using their own domain and doing it themselves. That's exactly why I wanted to do it myself. But some people don't have time or can't figure out how to do it so that's why I'm providing this service. It's 100% free and always will be.

Its nice to make the offer to people as you have, I just think its also a good idea to help educate people on how they can do it themself to be more in control

I wish more people wanted to do things like this themselves. It's such a rewarding thing having direct control of your digital identity.

Not a single person I know in my life puts any value on knowing anything about how the Internet works, self hosting, or even computers in general. I think it's so cool and just don't get how so many people don't care.

And it’s also a centralized point of failure ! So I have no idea yet what the best verification way is on nostr! But it’s definitely not the NIP05

Yeah, I'm all for implementing the best verification method we can. But this is why I am doing the free verification at Plebed is so people who don't want to/ can't run their own have access to one.

NIP05 is kind of a self certification of pubkey tied to traditional DNS.

So something better may be a form of peer attestation of your pubkey.

1. Using strictly NIP05 semantics, this could be a change to the NIP (or really another NIP) that allows specifying multiple NIP05s for one pubkey. This can of course be gamed by a single entity representing as multiple domains for that pubkey.

2. Another possibility is local labeling of accounts backed by in person verification. Kind of like trust levels for pgp.

3. Or perhaps a web of trust scoring algorithm from your account perspective to others based on how many people you follow also follow an account, activity levels etc.

Every type has pros/cons
