Having done what you're doing, nomad life, you learn what you really need when in an emergency. It's shockingly little and you typically only have to plan for 3-5 days. You can live with minimal food for far longer than you can without water. It's not fun, but you'll survive. I lived though disasters in countries where I barely spoke the language and didn't know anyone, never mind not looking like anyone either.
In every case, people are kind and will help if you respond in kind.
