I used to think of “God-fearing” as the descriptor of an authoritarian — someone who fears punishment from the most powerful entity.

But there is another sense of it, and that’s seeing God as one’s innermost self. In which case a God-fearing person is one who above all fear betraying his own deepest truths. Another word for this kind of God-fearing is “based.”
