According to the legend, when Tariq ibn Ziyad and his forces arrived on the southern coast of Spain, they were greatly outnumbered, and some of his troops were hesitant about facing such overwhelming odds. In order to motivate his troops and eliminate any thoughts of retreat, Tariq ordered his ships to be set on fire.
