Low time preference:

The cathedrals in Europe were built in an open source fashion, relying on volunteers and contributors, over the course of decades if not centuries.

The outcome of such work is majestic & long lasting

It was something the people built, because of the conviction in their beliefs.

In return it offered them hope.

Their time preference was so low, that even if they could not enjoy the fruits of their labor, they knew that their offspring could.
