The word racist has lost all meaning.
It's completely normal to want to live amongst your own kind but brainwash is one hell of a thing.
Pretty sure racism begins when you start believing other races are sub-human and either deserve to be subjugated or eliminated.
I've been thinking about this from the perspective of a segment of Trump voters, who want the US to remain majority white & Christian. I'm sure there are some racists among them, but is this position itself racist?
In itself? No. It depends largely on WHY they want the US to remain majority white and Christian. Assuming they are Christians themselves, if they believe other races are not made in the image of God to the same extent that whites are, then I believe that would fall under my previous definition of believing other races are sub-human.
If they simply want to preserve the "city on a hill" idea that many of the first immigrants wanted to establish here, and that this is best accomplished by keeping the US predominantly white and Christian, then I see no reason to call that racist, any more than folks wanting to keep Japan predominantly Japanese. Cultures will naturally want to preserve what makes them unique.
Once it crosses the line into having a superiority complex on the basis of your race alone, especially if it then crosses into seeking the subjugation or elimination of other races due to their supposed inferiority, that is when it becomes racism, in my opinion.
What if it's neither of these? What if you don't believe your culture or ethnicity is inherently superior (maybe even comparatively flawed in some aspects), yet simply want to preserve it mostly intact, rather than see it rapidly diluted or displaced through immigration?
Culture and ethnicity should not be used interchangeably. A society can lose its culture and have its ethnicity remain largely intact, while it would be exceptionally difficult to lose your ethnicity and have your culture remain intact.
Likewise, you can absolutely believe that there are things that make your culture superior to other cultures without being a racist. You can absolutely believe that certain cultures are evil, such as those that engage in human sacrifice, and should therefore be wiped out. However, once you believe that your ethnicity is superior to all other races, such that those other races should rightly be subject to yours or else be wiped out, simply because of their biology, then you have crossed the line into racism.
It's muddy waters because ethnicity and culture often so closely overlap one another, but they are not the same and should not be treated that way. A person coming out of a morally bankrupt culture may align himself with a superior culture while his ethnicity remains the same. Ethnicity we inherit by blood, but culture we inherit by being steeped in it from birth. One we may renounce to our good or ill, based on what we replace it with, while the other we have no choice in whatsoever.
This is also why I believe the idea of preserving the United States as both white and Christian is misguided, though not necessarily racist. What we should be trying to preserve is the Western brand of Christian culture. If other ethnicities find that culture attractive and wish to renounce their own in order to adopt it, more power to them! It's when folks want to eradicate that culture, regardless of their ethnicity, that we should have a problem with it.

Not unless you think your culture and ethnic group are a race.
Understanding that an ethnic group is just part of the human race, you must also understand that the genes and boundaries of the ethnic group will change over time, partly by breeding with other groups.
But understanding all that, it's certainly natural to want to mate with others like you and set up a strong position for your people. Or not. Depends on individual preference
