I really hope replacing social media likes with micro-payments of sats can tone down the garbage and restore value to public interaction spaces.
From teens in their bedrooms to major media organizations, everyone is being pushed toward clickbaitier, lower-effort, higher-outrage, frivolous content. But maybe measuring value by actual money rewarded will incentivize actual value, because there’s a lot I’d click but not pay for.
For example, I might click on an article entitled, “You Won’t Believe How Good Kylie Jenner Looks After Her Latest Plastic Surgery!” (I know, I’m weak) but there’s no way I’d pay any fraction of a cent to see it.
Then again, we’ve been tricked into thinking garbage is worth our attention, so maybe we’ll be just as easily tricked into thinking it’s worth our sats.
