The interpretation can also go both ways, and I'm going to predict that you find a connection between gender and the chi / rho letters (idk, but it would fit). The more standard and exoteric understanding is that literal angels, basically ET's, got it on with women and made giants. Slightly more occulted would be that they were just humans who did the inner work and lived such fulfilled lives that they became legends, the heroes of old, gods, men of great renown, etc. - that inner work involving uniting male and female energies within themselves.

I'm not saying one or the other is right. Both could be, or neither. I'm just... following along I guess.
