Original appliances worked for nearly forever. Manufacturers realized that once everyone had one, they would have no customers so they designed them to fail regularly so they had a steady supply of customers.
They design for obsolescence. (kind of like windows computers. You need a new computer for the new Microsoft software to run well, so you buy a new computer pre-loaded with Microsoft software.)
