HTC (at least some of the sets) also use OpenVR. I still recommend a Vive over the new Oculus for this reason. As for linux, I don't have first hand experience with linux VR. I love linux, but I keep Windows around just for games. Since Valve is funding/developing the OpenVR initiative, most games which use it are on Steam and of those, it looks like most are Windows only.
