Real miners know what's up! Gotta stay ahead of the game.
Bonus: Use Datum by nostr:nprofile1qqsq9k04vahllseell55m74n3047y88pzlr0z5yany32st29fapqmgsppemhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mp0qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnyv9kh2uewd9hj7qgawaehxw309ahx7um5wghxy6t5vdhkjmn9wgh8xmmrd9skctc87ckyu and you get 50% off of pool fees! Ocean cares so much about mining decentralization that they literally pay miners to construct their own block templates.
Technically you would just be a hasher. Miners dictate block templates.
Very true!
Well, you can do that with ocean datum though.
Plus you can choose different variants of templates created by the pool.
Unfortunately it is effectively impossible to run DATUM if you have your miners hosted. My local electricity cost is 3X what I pay at hosting, so I can't afford to do it any other way. I would think that it would still be possible to point the miners to my own DATUM server to construct templates, but the latency would probably also kill my chances of actually solving any blocks.
One interesting thing that DATUM has done is make it possible to see that there are effectively two miners solving something like 80 to 90% of OCEAN's blocks. "ELEKTRON ENERGY" and "PENGUIN" are by far the largest winners of blocks.
I would suggest lowering your scope. Run 3-5 BitAxes for personal mining. If you can't make your own energy the hard reality is you can't be a miner. Hashing feeds centralized control so, that's a choice you have to make.
I've got a fair amount of hashrate hosted mining to OCEAN, so that's not changing any time soon, and I'm certainly not cutting it back to a few BitAxes...
If OCEAN or my hosting provider can come up with a way for me to mine to my own DATUM server I will do that in a heartbeat.
The thing is YOU don't have the hashrate. You are paying a contractor to provide hashrate in Ocean's pool. This means unless the Hashrate provider has customizability surrounding the bitcoin software they run I.E. Bitcoin Knots and they allow you to add a block template to their DATUM instance (assuming that hashes a block) you are just keeping their lights on and they kick you some hashrate for their trouble.
This is akin to saying "I mined some gold. I paid a crew to come with machines and work the mine, and they sent it to a refiner, and I got some of what was refined" that's not mining, that's financing a mining operation. The refiner makes the rules, and the miners you hired do the work.
The suggestion to have Bitaxes was so YOU could mine affordably without relying on the systems that you are now. No disrespect, I am just a very technical guy, and technically hosted mining is not mining.

(We need more eyes on Bitcoin knots though, a single dev pushing to master, no matter how good he is spells disaster for long term use.)
