This would have been my morning picture – had I not been so utterly exhausted that I promptly passed out on the sofa.

As a die-hard night owl, there’s little more punishing than having to rouse a school-age child while my brain is still negotiating with reality.

What truly baffles me is why it’s still standard practice in so many countries to send children out the door at the crack of dawn – despite overwhelming evidence that they perform significantly better in school when granted just one more hour of sleep.

Sure, I get the logic: if the kids are out early, the parents can get to work early. But just because I understand the reasoning doesn’t mean I’ll ever be at peace with the absurdity of it.
