Why should I create art for the rich to use as tax loopholes? I get the short end of the stick for doing all the work, accepting $500, then they save millions on taxes after taking it to go get appraised my their buddy and donating it to their own foundations...
I’d say art is a subset of content. There are many uses for content. The global “content” economy represents hundreds of billions of dollars in economic activity each year. Hardly something to dismiss so flippantly.
I think the context is more about the social media side of art vs content and what’s expected of an artist today.
I think that same point can be seen through the musicians and their demand for content from record labels and ability to succeed.
There’s a lot of overlap. What’s considered art and what’s considered non-art content? Maybe obvious in some cases, but probably not in many cases. Every company needs a content strategy. Artists provide much of that, whether they’re employees of the companies or contracted externally.
My point is that there is increasing demand for content. I don’t think that’s a bad thing. It’s complementary to art and artists.
Content is some kind of media created solely for consumption on social media platforms, whereas music and art are music and art.
I think content is another way of saying filler, like skits on a Fugees album. They could be amusing one time (two time) but then forgotten forever more.
Although an alternative view could be the complete opposite… I dunno.
I used to make ‘content’ a few years back, which for me where short music/film clips for insta but it always felt follow compared to making a complete piece of music. More high time preference I guess.

I see them as complementary. Content as you define it is still a major industry and provides many artists with opportunities. I don’t think there’s a need to demonize it, although I would agree that art is something deeper and richer within the human experience.
I must say watching musicians from up close opened my eyes a bit more. Just singing a ready song at least properly takes many hours of work, days or weeks of planning it out. And if they do it well in short time, either they're absolutely blessed from upon or rather already spent decades studying the craft on daily basis.
