Replying to Avatar Dr. Hax

I want Meshtastic to do e2ee DMs from my phone to the recipient's phone, not from my node to the recipient's node. There is a big difference.

Kludgey but GnuPG encrypted messages might work. Not as neat as something like Signal though

Not sure about potential size restriction issues here. But I think newer versions of GPG actually support elliptic curves, so yeah, that could get the job done in a pinch.
