They are paid mercenary free agent actors, usually with stunt training. They get as little info as needed to show up, suit up, and follow the script. I’ve actually met one in real life. And it tracks with my experience in the film industry. It’s just a job, and they are paid to do it. (Sadly, though, unlike real movies, they can’t draw too much attention to themselves because they can’t be reused. Although, incredibly, they do get reused all the time which is truly hilarious. But speaks to that tension between “you’re good at this, you’re reliable, we should use you again if we can get away with it”)
