I'm running a Bitcoin Core node on my laptop and just enabled inbound connections via port forwarding on my router.

Is there anything I should be aware of with regards to security there? I noticed if I'm running a VPN on my laptop inbound connections don't work...

yes, CSW put a backdoor when he first wrote bitcoin while riding his unicorn; he'll now be able to turn your computer into a murderous robot

depending on what you want to use your node for, it might be easier to run it on TOR. In that case you don't have to worry about router configuration and security issues. Beside that, be sure to run the latest patched version of bitcoin core (of the version you want to run)
