Our ability to sense the realm we inhabit & then assemble symbols to describe them is flawed.
Facts can change & vary from person to person as well as between cultures.
I think it's more useful to view facts as opinions & so I maintain this belief.
My core belief is that beliefs should only be maintained while they continue to serve the believer. I've held it both of these beliefs for over 15 years.
Even if you take something as simple & unchallengeable as "The sky is blue", it raises questions like:
- what is 'sky' or what is 'blue'?
- what about on a cloudy day or at sunset/sunrise/night?
As an autist, I found it difficult to exist around humans who really don't care for the consistent & precise use of words. Adopting these beliefs helped me navigate their world without being triggered or compromising my own beliefs.
When someone says 'it's a fact' I hear 'it's your opinion' & store it in memory accordingly (or dismiss it altogether if I don't value their opinion).
