A #yakhchal is an ancient ice house used primarily in #Iran's #desert regions for producing and storing ice. Dating back to around 400 BCE, these structures feature a domed shape above ground and a subterranean storage area insulated with thick walls made from a special mortar called sārooj. Yakhchals utilized evaporative cooling techniques, allowing them to maintain low temperatures year-round, even in hot climates. Ice harvested in winter was stored for summer use.
