In politics, the government, if sufficiently short term motivated, can be tempted to fork the system at the detriment of productive citizens. Sovereign individuals owning firearms is an immune function that helps prevent that.

I would love to believe this, but everyone knows it's not true. It's just a question of one law getting passed, and that's it. Just like in New Zealand, 90% of Americans would simply hand over their guns, if it means that's the only way they're keeping their social security.
