He does have a point, a game called "Football" should be played mainly with the feet - American Football always seems to be carried everywhere it goes... Being British, my exposure to the game might be limited to when it appears in movies and TV shows but it does seem like an excuse for men to get very close to other men and then go for a bit of a runaround!
