I think it's both but inflation definitely makes the irresponsible spending hurt a lot worse.
Haha this sounds like my parents. “You chose this debt”. My response is usually, “sure I did. But if tomorrow’s dollar is cheaper than today’s why wouldn’t I use future dollars today as long as I have a budget surplus?”
