Of course some people thought of killing him, no doubt. Yet he walked without protection.
There is also the example of Dracula. He left a golden cup for days in the middle of a village unattended, to see if someone would steal it. Turned out that didn't matter how small the possibility to get caught was. Getting impaled was not a chance to play with...

And in both of those cases the leaders were military men who had repeatedly saved their countries by defeating enemies many times more powerful than their homelands.
Even if you go up against the bad boss and win, what happens next? Will anyone thank you? Can you really fill those oversized blood-spattered boots?
I think power and authority hungry people are those who make these killings (maybe in general too).
