Better read this before you go: "The Sex Lives of Cannibals: Adrift in the Equatorial Pacific Paperback – June 8, 2004"

TL;DR: pretty depressing overall. They're being fed junk food and beer to let the US marine use their land as a military base. Everything is polluted with waste because nobody cares about nature (that's the LOCALS not caring BTW), and the permanent humid heat robs you of all energy. Also: when you get back, you feel lost in the West because you can't unsee the hyperconsumption.

But the book was a fun read nonetheless.
