I tried to learn gimp, but I just hated it lol, but yes, it's a legit alternative. Just not for me. Also, my note is generic. Like saying Klee even though it might be Puffs tissues you're using.

I am a fan of Photopea, it's got the same interface and toolset as Photoshop, but it's free. Photopea.org
