Before filming The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Mark Hamill was in a car accident that nearly killed him and required reconstructive facial surgery using part of his ear. Hamill thought the injuries would ruin his career, but they were explained in the movie when Luke gets attacked by a Wampa.
