The founding idea was - store of value must follow the properties of information store. Barter was synchronous spot deal - like the ephemeral spoken word. Gold allowed us to preserve value the way written word preserved the information. The idea may be extended to digital realm -> Bitcoin is digital value. It evolved as the information morphed into digital format(s).
