The #EU #Commission has appointed Fiona Scott Morton, a #US citizen, as chief competition economist. Her role is to "evaluate the economic aspects of investigations by the Commission’s antitrust, merger and state aid departments". She will be the first non-EU person to take such a senior post. She worked for the Obama administration, has consulted regularly for U.S. Big Tech companies such as Apple and Microsoft... and she will be advising on investigations and regulation against U.S. tech giants.😂 A few days before her appointment, on July 10, the European Commission decided it is safe for personal data to be transferred from the European Union to US-based companies, handing a victory to firms like Facebook and Google despite protests from privacy advocates who worry about US government surveillance. @LauraRuHK
