I've been fighting sending day-by-day "request deletion" to relays which claim that NIP9 is implemented.
I still receive "deleted" notes despite the fact that I've re-installed the nostr client many times - #amethyst.
NOSTR is a disaster regarding privacy.
Be aware of that.

Use better relays. The choice of relays is all yours. Many don't implement deletions at all. Especially the free ones. If you are not paying, you are always the product.

Is there a good place to find relays?
The Internet is forever.
Nobody ever claimed that all relays HAD to strictly abide by everything. They should, and it is important for the protocol - but there are so many relays indirectly linked to others that share notes back and forth, there is a high chance of if you post it once, it's out there - and potentially forever.
Deletion is more for when you *just* posted something, immediately realize you derped, and click the delete button as fast as possible, if your client has it - and then having to pray that it wasn't already sent on it's merry way across the network of relays. x)
