Eric De Vries is a liar. He is smart enough to know that his calculations and extrapolations were incorrect, especially when it was demonstrated to him, repeatedly, by bitcoiners. And yet, various politicians and journalists relied on his work without questioning it, because it confirmed their priors.

Watching the NYT and WaPo base numerous articles on Digiconomist’s “research” has been one of the most revelatory (and depressing) experiences of my adult life. These papers of record published absolute garbage (see also Mora, et al.) on a topic I know much about, and it was like waking up from a coma… Gell-Mann Amnesia. I lost trust in these institutions.
