Fun fact: criminal courts have the "beyond reasonable doubt" standard. Civil courts, on the other hand, have a "more likely than not" standard.

Civil sometime has a higher burden than preponderance: clear and convincing evidence (which is less than beyond a reasonable doubt)
It is reserved for certain kinds of counter claims and for stuff like punitive damages in excess of compensatory
