I'm fairly certain that in the military, captured soldiers are obligated to cause as much trouble and disruption as possible for theor captors in order to draw attention and energies away from the battle front.

It's best done in groups. See [The Great Escape](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057115/?ref_=ext_shr). But even if they do, if they've drawn resources away from the battlefield then they have succeeded. Some fates worse than death.
Ahh yes a group would be different. Youre right, death isnt the worst that can happen.
